Marangu Route
Day 1
5-Day Marangu Route Itinerary (Kilimanjaro)
Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park (Marangu Gate), Hike to Mandara Hut
Description: After breakfast and briefing, drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (about 1 hour). Register and start the climb, walking through the rainforest to Mandara Hut. Optional side trip to Maundi Crater for stunning views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.
Elevation: 1860m/6100ft to 2700m/8875ft
Day 2
Hike Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Description: Leave the rainforest, ascend to the open moorlands and reach Horombo Hut. Enjoy great views of Mawenzi and Kibo summits, and observe giant lobelias and groundsels. Possible altitude effects may be felt.
Elevation: 2700m/8875ft to 3700m/12,200ft
Day 3
Hike Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Description: Pass the last water point and continue to the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Vegetation thins and you enter a “moonscape” terrain. Dinner, rest, and preparation for summit ascent.
Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft
Day 4
Hike Kibo Hut to Summit, then down to Horombo Hut
Description: Start the summit climb in the early morning (midnight to 2 am). Ascend steep scree or snow to Gilman’s Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After summiting, descend to Kibo for lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut.
Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft
Day 5
Hike Horombo Hut to the trailhead, Drive to Moshi
Description: Descend through moorland and lush forest to Mandara Hut and then to the Marangu Gate. A vehicle will drive you back to Moshi, where you’ll have time to rest or explore before departure.
Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft
