Located in Arusha, Tanzania, just a few kilometers from the city, Mount Meru is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa. It offers a fantastic climbing experience with spectacular scenery, including glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro. Compared to its more famous counterparts, Mount Meru is less crowded and boasts incredible wildlife and history, creating a memorable 4-day hiking adventure.
Day 1:
Arusha to Miriakamba Hut
Departure: We depart from your hotel in Arusha in the morning and drive approximately one hour to Arusha National Park.
Starting Point: The trek begins near the Ngarenanyuki River after completing park formalities.
Trek to Miriakamba Hut: You will be accompanied by a professional mountain guide and an armed ranger. On the way, you’ll likely spot wildlife, including buffalo, waterbucks, giraffes, warthogs, zebras, and gazelles. There may even be a chance to see more reserved animals like leopards or elephants.
Overnight: Dinner and overnight stay at Miriakamba Hut.
Day 2
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Morning: After breakfast, we begin a steep ascent to the Saddle Hut.
Optional Excursion: On arrival, you’ll have the option to hike up Little Meru for panoramic views before returning to the Saddle Hut.
Evening: After an early dinner, you’re encouraged to get to sleep early, as the summit hike begins at midnight.
Day 3
Summit Day – Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut
Summit Attempt: Around midnight, equipped with headlamps, we’ll set off on the challenging ascent to the summit. The climb takes about five hours and offers stunning views.
Peak Experience: Upon reaching the summit, take time to enjoy the views, capture photos, and soak in the moment.
Descent: After a break at the top, we descend to the Saddle Hut for lunch and then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4
Miriakamba Hut to Momela Gate to Arusha
Descent: Following breakfast, we hike through Meru’s lush cloud forest towards Momela Gate. Be cautious on the often-slippery path.
Return to Arusha: At Momela Gate, you’ll have a chance to purchase souvenirs like Mount Meru trekking t-shirts. Our vehicle will then take you back to Arusha for the night.
