STONE TOWN
Stone Town is the historical center of Zanzibar City, the capital of the Zanzibar archipelago.
As a primary trading post on the spice, silk and slave trade routes for over a millennium, Stone Town has
been a unique meeting place, blending African, Indian, Arabian and European cultures. It is one of the
few remaining ancient towns in Africa.
It’s beauty, and historical value has earned it a well-deserved place on the UNESCO world heritage list.
Not only is this city visually beautiful, with old colonial buildings and exquisitely carved Zanzibari
doorways, but your senses will be overwhelmed with the scent of the sea and spice and the calls to
prayer echoing from the minarets.

NUNGWI BEACH
Nungwi is the second-largest settlement, after Stone Town on Zanzibar’s main island Unguja.
Once a hub for dhow building, Nungwi straddles the line between modernity and tradition. Although the
tourism industry has significantly developed the area, you can still watch the dhow boats cast off for a
night of deep-sea fishing.
The clear blue waters are beautifully calm, thanks in part to its tip-of-the-island location, where the
changing of tides is less dramatic than some other islands.
Nungwi is a tourist hotspot due to its prime location on the main island, exquisite beauty, activities and
accommodation to suit all budgets. Places to stay range from swanky 5-star hotels overlooking the white dove sands to boutiques, cottages
and budget backpackers with dormitory-style rooms.

MAFIA ISLAND
Just a 30-minute flight south of Zanzibar, Mafia is the one island off Tanzania’s coast that really
encourages visitors to explore its offshore islands and sand bars.
The name ‘Mafia’ derives from the Arabic word “Morifyeh” meaning archipelago.
The island’s lush vegetation offers refuge for a great variety of creatures including monkeys, small
antelope and fruit bats. Mafia’s real draw however, becomes apparent once you slip below the Ocean’s
rippling surface.
Home to the oldest and largest marine protected area in Tanzania, all of Mafia’s reefs are at depths of
less than 30 meters, making it a great location for all levels of divers and snorkelers. The reefs offer a
staggeringly beautiful and varied display of marine life from the smallest nudibranch to the giant
grouper.

CHUMBE ISLAND
Chumbe Island is a small privately owned island a few kilometers off the main island of Zanzibar, known
for its ecological innovation and exceptional coral reefs.
It is a private nature reserve that was developed from 1991 for the conservation and sustainable
management of uninhabited Chumbe Island off Zanzibar, one of the last pristine coral islands in the
region.
The island has two historic buildings, a small mosque and a lighthouse, both built around the beginning
of the 20th century.
In Chumbe island, you get to explore the stunning coral reef sanctuary and coral rag forest, relax in the
exclusive eco-bungalows and savor traditional Zanzibari cuisine

CHOLE ISLAND
Chole is a tiny island off the Tanzanian coast, about 160kms south of Zanzibar.
It is 2.26km square island based on a fossil coral reef exposed at the end of the last ice age about 12,000
years ago.
The island is also home to a sizeable roost of giant fruit bats, sign-posted along a path past a chirruping
Qu’ran school, although the noisome racket of the roost at morning and night is guide enough. The
docking beach at Chole is a good spot to see traditional boat-building and sail-making, in which all
materials are impressively fashioned by hand.
The local people are friendly, and it is interesting to see their smart mud and pole houses, often well-
decorated with pebbles to add colour and style.
